Les Mots Pour Ne Pas Le Dire (arretsurimages.net)

04.05.2023

‘Let 1,000 Flowers Bloom’: A.I. Funding Frenzy Escalates (nytimes.com)

14.03.2023

Sam Lessin, a venture capitalist at Slow Ventures, said he didn’t think the tech advances in A.I. translated to opportunities for start-ups. The best way to invest in A.I., Mr. Lessin said, is to buy the publicly traded stocks of big tech companies.

The Silicon Valley Bank Collapse Should be a Radicalizing Moment (disconnect.blog)

14.03.2023

They spent the past fifteen years eroding the position of workers, extending surveillance practices, funding monopolistic endeavors to destroy traditional industries, and ultimately creating bubbles they knew would burst, but which they hoped to profit off.

For years, the narrative of the tech industry was that it was run by conscientious liberals, but no one can reasonably argue that any longer — if it was ever truly anything more than a marketing pitch for a particular moment in US politics.

Teamflow founder Flo Crivello opined that the reaction to the collapse was a much bigger story than the fact his colleagues had kicked off a bank run because of the “honest to god, hammer and sickle communists hating tech and actually wanting our heads on a spike.”

After years of being treated as our saviors, they haven’t responded well to the increased criticism leveled at their industry and the role they’ve played in all the ways tech has made the world a far worse place. People are getting fed up with rampaging Goliaths who want to be treated as heroic Davids until the end of their days.

The system devised by the people at the top of Silicon Valley has made them fabulously wealthy, but it hasn’t worked out for the rest of us. They promise us innovations that will improve our lives, but the reality is they gave up on true innovation long ago. Instead, they’re just tinkering with new systems to exploit, exclude, and oppress for profit — consequences be damned.

La réaction des VCs est assez hilarante.

Meta layoffs: Facebook owner to cut 10,000 staff (bbc.com)

14.03.2023

Mr Zuckerberg cited higher interest rates in the US, global geopolitical instability and increased regulation as some of the factors affecting Meta.

And now they're faced with a perfect storm of falling ad revenues from companies with their own bills to pay, and a user base which has less money to spend, making existing ad space less valuable.

Disconnect Roundup: Don't cry for Silicon Valley Bank (disconnect.blog)

12.03.2023

We do need to crush the Silicon Valley system and build something
new if we ever want technology and innovation to serve the public good
over the bottom lines of Silicon Valley investors.

Why Write? (fs.blog)

11.03.2023

Writing requires the compression of an idea. When done poorly, compression removes insights. When done well, compression keeps the insights and removes the rest. Compression requires both thinking and understanding, which is one reason writing is so important.

Think of the difference as starting at the beginning or the end of a maze. When you start at the beginning, you have to convince people the path is the right one. When you start at the end, they already know you’re taking them where they want to go.

Many things can be done by tools that write for you, but they won’t help you learn to think or understand a problem with deep fluency. And you need deep fluency to solve hard problems.

11.03.2023

What could I do with a universal function — a tool for turning just about any X into just about any Y with plain language instructions?

The simple act of asking and answering the question was clarifying and calming. It plucked AI out of the realm of abstract dread and plunked it down on the workbench.

Question-first. This is the way.

Earnings: Zoom, Costco, Salesforce & LEGO (genuineimpact.substack.com)

10.03.2023

The CRM giant beat all expectations for EPS and revenue, sending its stock up 16% after the announcement. As with many other tech companies during this time, Salesforce cut thousands of jobs in a bid for higher profitability which included co-CEO Bret Taylor stepping down from his position.

More recently, Salesforce debuted their own AI service - Einstein GPT - to be integrated within their CRM system.

Tech-last (robinrendle.com)

10.03.2023

Her’s one example: many years ago I couldn’t get folks on a team to stop talking about emoji. At every turn folks would see the popularity of emoji bloom around them and then they would try and slam it into the website we worked on together. Emoji all the things! The team was obsessed with the emoji they were seeing in emails and websites and apps that they couldn’t imagine a world without them. They believed that our humble website looked out of touch without emoji, where I loudly, aggressively argued that by chasing trends we would never be the ones to set them.

A few months later, the obsession was gone. Overnight we stopped talking about emoji and now every other conversation was focused on some half-baked project about chatbots. Then it was crypto of course, then a few years later it was NFT junk that disappeared just as quickly as it came, and now, today, again with the chatbots. Although they’ve improved quite a bit, I still believe that once the initial excitement wears off it’s easy to see how these tools spit out mostly useless and irrelevant chunks of words that you can’t ever trust.

It’s cool tech, sure. But it ain’t a product.

Deadlines as Technology (blog.jim-nielsen.com)

09.03.2023

Set a deadline, even if the one thing you learn when you fail to ship, is that you’re bad at estimating and meeting deadlines. That’s a chance to improve for the next one you set.
And best of all?

There’s no yearly subscription. Deadlines are free.

How Nvidia Grew From Gaming To A.I. Giant, Now Powering ChatGPT (youtube.com)

08.03.2023

The Supreme Court Could Be About to Decide the Legal Fate of AI Search (theverge.com)

07.03.2023

Familiar search engine interfaces can rely on a measure of protection from Section 230 if they link to inaccurate information, arguing that they’re simply posting links to content from other sources.

The heart of the case is whether a web service can lose Section 230 protections by organizing user-generated content in a way that promotes or highlights it.

Section 230 is an incredibly important law, but removing it wouldn’t let people automatically win a lawsuit over every incorrectly summarized fact.

I don’t want to log in to your website (theverge.com)

07.03.2023

This is some real tragedy of the commons shit. The web is becoming a miserable experience because some salesbro who is trying to meet his KPIs is doing stuff to marginally increase the number of paying customers. (And you know, the hell with the rest of us!) The more each site tries to create its own little walled garden, the less valuable the open web becomes.

I’d like to believe we’re better than this, that it’s still possible to make weird, beautiful stuff online and find an audience without doing the scummy marketing grotesquerie.

Microsoft aims to reduce “tedious” business tasks with new AI tools (arstechnica.com)

07.03.2023

In sales parlance, Copilot integrates with customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to help businesses streamline their sales and customer support processes.

Those meddling kids! The Reverse Scooby-Doo theory of tech innovation comes with the excuses baked in (niemanlab.org)

06.03.2023

Balaji is simply projecting, insisting that in the future, AI companies will surely solve those problems. This is a type of magical thinking. And like all real magic, what they are actually attempting is an elaborate misdirection.

My low-friction publishing workflow (jlongster.com)

05.03.2023

SSG favors run-time simplicity over build-time complexity. That’s a tradeoff many are willing to make, but I find having to commit my content and push to github just to publish content way too much friction.

March 2023 update (manyver.se)

05.03.2023

In practice, that means I'll take a break from fixing Manyverse bugs, fixing crashes, building new UI features, and instead I'll focus on research and development for the new SSB core modules.

Library of Economic Possibility (economicpossibility.org)

Our mission is to advance public knowledge of economic policies that may help build a thriving 21st century economy.
